Glycolic Acid
Glycolic Acid also known as hydroacoustic acid, is one of the important and smallest acids belonging to the AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) group. It is either found naturally in some of the sugar crops but is also prepared synthetically in the chemical lab by making chloroacetic acid react with sodium hydroxide and then making it go through a re-acidification process.
Molecular formula of Glycolic Acid is C2H4O3 , which can also be written as HOCH2CO2H. It is a clear aqueous solution of soft yellow color but sometimes it may seem colorless. It has a peculiar odor that is quite negligible. The solution of Glycolic acid is highly soluble. This Acid contains around 70% of concentrate and 30% of water. The pH level can show results between 0.5 to 2.
Natural Glycolic Acid is used in the formulation of many skincare and cosmetic products like toner, face cream, serum, body wash, deodrant, night cream, soap, scrub etc. as it can be used as an exfoliant that creates a peeling effect on the skin. It is helpful for removing ingrown hair. Its binding ability with water molecules and tiny particles makes it easily penetrable into skin pores. It is found in many OTC (Over The Counter) products because it is safe and skin-friendly. Natural antibacterial and antioxidant activity makes it even more effective for skin and hair application.
